Exploitation of Natural Resources 02

This third Dossier is dedicated to oil and gas photo books from the Artphilein Library collection. It is part of our long-time research and collection of documentation of the exploitation of natural resources (in 2022 the first chapter was dedicated to mining rocks, minerals and coal). By viewing the books on display, scrolling through the images of the covers of the books reproduced here with a short caption, reading Davide Monteleone’s text, looking at his photographs, as well as Marco D’Anna’s disturbing shots featured at the beginning and end of this publication, the viewer will get a much clearer idea of the many problems and risks associated with the exploitation of oil and gas.

Sinomocene at PhEST

“The landscapes in Davide Monteleone’s images of China’s belt and road initiative are very familiar to me. We can see desert, uninhabited wasteland and views along the Yangtze River and in north-west China. There are also photographs showing the characters “Stay strong, Wuhan!” on skyscrapers in neon lights.

They are reminiscent of images I took in China, which captured dilapidated cities before they were rebuilt; energy plants; the development of impoverished areas and large-scale architecture. […]

Monteleone’s photographs are broad in scope and encompass many stories and strange landscapes. The Italian photographer began his project in Russia in 2014 before visiting vast rail and road projects across Asia; container ports; factories; casinos; and the Grand Renaissance dam in Ethiopia. The images clearly depict China’s strategic ambitions, very different from the original Silk Road, which operated from around 130BC until the mid-15th century. The Silk Road was a network of trade routes, whereas the belt and road initiative embeds a political ambition beyond commerce. The issue in question here is: who will be the centre of the world? Who will rise to world power?”

Sinomocene at the Stapferhaus during Fotofestival Lenzburg.

“While there has been concern raised in the West, recently, regarding a possible end of Globalization as we know it, Davide Monteleone’s long-term project investigates the immense efforts by China to reshape the global movement of goods, services and capital by an infrastructure initiative known as “Belt and Road” or “New Silk Road”, and by doing so tilt the geopolitical balance towards the East. However, there is a certain break between the economic and geopolitical processes at work and how they are manifested in the real world. Much of it remains simply invisible or is too all-encompassing to be pictured, which poses a challenge to an artist working in photography and interested in presenting us with more than the facts. But Monteleone finds intriguing images that back up his extensive research and rich data that informs his stunning photographs.”

"Sinomocene" is a data-driven investigation that takes its cue from the documentation of the Chinese initiative known as "Belt and Road" to investigate more widely on issues of new forms of colonialism, globalisation and relation between Powers and individuals. The work focuses on the social and environmental impact of large movements of money capital linked to geopolitical strategies at the global and local levels. Announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, BRI is a 1 trillion USD investment to lay the foundations for long-term economic growth across developing economies.

The book, published by Artphilein Editions is the result of 8 years of work and contains texts by Ai Weiwei, Viraj Parikh, Miriam Zlobinski.

it will be available by the end of August.

Il tempo di un viaggio, Marco Pesaresi, Postcart Edizioni - Curated by Davide Monteleone

In 2017 I was given the opportunity to curate the exhibition “Il tempo di un viaggio” at Savignano Photo Festival, Italy, a retrospective on the unreleased work of Italian photographer Marco Pesaresi about his journey on the Trans-Siberian railway.

I met Marco soon after his Russian adventure, just before his last trip. In his photographs I have always recognized something of him and of the Russia I got to know over a decade ago.

Last year I had the pleasure to work together with Postcart Editions on drawing up the exhibition catalogue, a collection of images that I see as successful accidental encounters, as exquisite examples of sincere and honest photography. Not presuming to explain something, but rather to understand.

"Medio Corso"

In the fall of 2017 I had the pleasure to lead a group of students during a week long masterclass/residency in the area of the Adda river, in the north of Italy, organised  by ZTC and coordinated by Adrea Biffi. The result of this experience became the book "Medio Corso", a photographic investigation and an anthology of novels curated by Wu Ming 2 inspired by the landscape and the people of the river.

Sony World Photography Award - Villa Reale Monza

Schermata 2017-09-01 alle 14.01.36.png

In occasione della Mostra Sony World Photography Awards & Martin Parr,  (8-28 Settembre 2017, Villa Reale - Monza.)

Spasibo Shortlisted at Paris Photo

"Spasibo" starts with a bang: an official fireworks display celebrating Chechnya’s Constitution Day in the capital, Grozny. The charade continues with photographs of well-heeled couples in a newly constructed square; sunlight glints off skyscrapers and black SUVs. But Davide Monteleone, a runner-up for the 2014 Aperture Portfolio Prize and winner of the 2011 European Publishers Award, quickly bypasses officially sanctioned narratives. He captures the anxieties of a persecuted culture at odds with Russia and itself: its newly politicized religiosity and accompanying misogyny, its disabled veterans, and the omnipresent visage of its Putin-vetted president, Ramzan Kadyrov. “This book stands out for its narrative sequencing and the intensity of the printing,” says Julien Frydman. “Despite being relatively classic in form, small design touches—including short-trimmed, sage-colored pages on which historical, personal photos appear, and a gorgeous silk-screened cloth cover—give this book extra impact".

Spasibo - Aperture Portfolio Finalist

Schermata 2020-05-04 alle 10.00.31.png

Davide Monteleone’s series Spasibo depicts the perplexing political reality in Chechnya, a Russian republic bordering the Caucasus Mountains and plagued with a complex history of conflict. For more than two centuries, the predominantly Muslim Chechens have struggled to assert independence. They have in turn endured mass deportation under Stalin; prolonged civil war between separatists and Russia, as well as with local Moscow-backed authorities; organized crime; and abuses of religious and civil rights. Monteleone’s outspoken authorship of these photographs entails considerable personal risk. His ability to document this subject without arriving at clichés of violence and oppression is a considerable achievement.

Judiciously edited, Spasibo comprises studied representations of the Chechen context. Portraits and tableaux coincide with landscapes and objects photographed as if for an archive. These varied photographic strategies share common formal threads: a muted gray pervades the series, and each image is purposefully and resolutely composed. By linking disparate images—a reproduction of the Chechen constitution and a portrait of the devout praying toward Mecca; the mountain refuge of separatist rebels and a plate bearing the portrait of Putin-approved Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov, himself a reformed ex-rebel—Monteleone conveys the disconcerting normalcy that reigns in Chechnya following the intense trauma of its recent past.
